State Response re: Conowingo Dam Toxic Sediment

DNR & MDE Response to Senator Hershey
As previously reported, State Senator Steve Hershey recently requested MDE and DNR to provide available information regarding the toxicity (levels of contamination) in the sediments accumulated in Conowingo Pond. The Senator’s request was compelled by the publicized statement of a DNR marine scientist that “toxic sediments from Conowingo Dam” were among the possible causes of the decline in blue crab population.

Letter to MDE Secretary Reiterating Coalition Concerns About Water Quality Certification for Conowingo
The Coalition issued a letter last Friday, October 10, to MDE Secretary Robert Summers questioning the status of the State’s review of Exelon’s water quality certification application (State decision due by January 31, 2015) and reiterating concerns about the lack of public information. The letter also requests information about new State-sanctioned studies concerning Conowingo impacts on the Bay.
